India Inks Deal to Build 8 ASW Vessels

: May 13, 2019 - : 12:48 pm

India has given a contract to the state-run Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) to build eight anti-submarine warfare (ASW) shallow water crafts for the navy, according to a senior government official.

The agreement worth $903 million was signed by India’s maritime systems joint secretary Ravi Kant and S.S. Dogra, finance official of GRSE, on April 29, the defence ministry official informs.

The Request for Proposal or RFP was issued by the Indian navy to the Defense Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) Shipyards and Indian private shipyards in 2014. “GRSE emerged as a successful bidder for design, construction and supply of the eight anti-submarine warfare shallow water crafts,” the official says.

The first ship will be delivered within 42 months from the contract signing date, and subsequently two ships will be scheduled for delivery every year. The deadline for completing the project is 84 months from April 29. The anti-submarine warfare shallow water crafts are designed for a deep displacement of 750 tons, speed of 25 knots. They are capable of full-scale sub-surface surveillance of coastal waters and coordinated ASW operations with aircraft. The vessels are equipped with highly advanced integrated platform management systems including propulsion and auxiliary machines, power generation and distribution machinery and damage-control systems. GRSE is at the moment handling major projects including construction of three stealth frigates, ASW Corvettes, LCUs and four large survey vessels for the Indian naval forces.

Since its inception as a DPSU in 1960, GRSE has been India’s pioneer warship builder, with over 100 warships built, ranging from advanced Frigates to ASW Corvettes, Fleet Tankers and Fast Attack Crafts.
