EHUD AACMI Enhances Israeli Air Force’s Capabilities

: Nov 18, 2019 - : 6:37 am

A small airspace; multiple enemies and allies entangled; the need for surgical air attacks; That is the situation Israel has been facing in Syria.

Israel has confirmed that in the last 18 months the Israeli Air Force (IAF) has performed over 200 attacks on Iranian targets in Syria. The reason – to foil Teheran’s plan to build facilities for the production of ballistic missiles, to be used by the Hezbollah terror organization in Lebanon. Some of the targets were located very near to Russian army units.

The Israeli IAF has been training to perform surgical attacks using many methods and systems.

One of these systems, can be considered a revolution. It is a system that saves big money and enables to train combat pilots in scenarios that could not be included before in the training schedule.

The heart of this capability is an Israeli developed system, dubbed “Ehud”, the name of an Israeli Air Force pilot that died when his fighter aircraft collided with another aircraft during training.

EHUD enables live training at the most sophisticated level, including the firing of simulated armaments, real time hit / miss assessments and outstanding debriefing capabilities.

According to IAI the EHUD is used with AIM -9L, Hellfire and R73 enclosures: in a range of onboard LRU boxes, in racks designed for ships, utility helicopters and air defense platforms “the system can be installed in additional enclosures as required, it is designed to be carried by many platforms.”

According to IAI, in its fifth generation, EHUD enables smooth transition into the LVC Live Virtual Constructive world because its advanced infrastructure supports embedded constructive entities and simulation sensors (such as EW threats).

The EHUD family is complemented by advanced mobile and fixed ground stations and a complete range of support equipment.

IAI has so far delivered more than 1800 EHUD AACMI systems. This IAI system is now used by 17 air forces in the world’s important fighter jets: F-15, F-16, F-18, Eurofighter Typhoon, Su-30, MIG 29 and others.

The IAF, has recently enhanced the capabilities of its M-346 (LAVI) advanced trainers by adding external fuel tanks. The external fuel tanks addition became feasible after the software blocks of the advanced trainer were upgraded based on a long series of test flights performed by the IAF’s flight test squadron.

The LAVI is being equipped with live bombs to enhance the effect of the advanced training missions of air-ground missions, the type that the Israeli pilots are performing recently in big numbers.

The capability to use all these upgrades is supported by equipping the advanced trainer with EHUD, AACMI system to allow them to perform complicated training scenarios with the forces’ Leonardo M-346 t(LAVI) trainers.

The EHUD is also carried by all the IAF’s fighter aircraft. The IAF has recently ordered more advanced air combat maneuvering instrumentation (AACMI) systems from IAI’s MLAM division.

According to IAI, EHUD opens the door for shared live drills and debriefing with the Lavi advanced trainers, based on the EHUD network, as is already carried out by other countries, such as Italy.

He revealed that all future sales of the M-346 by Leonardo will include the EHUD in an internal configuration.

This, thanks to IAI’s capacity to perform LVC (Live, Virtual, Constructive) drills with the newest and most advanced generation of EHUD.

The Israeli company’s official said that in addition to this application, IAI is providing on-demand training services, assigning training experts to run and oversee the debriefing systems in a range of the air force activities.
