The Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute (OECI) will acquire a DriX Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) from iXblue, a high-tech company specialized in the design and manufacturing of advanced autonomous, marine and photonics technologies.
The purchase contract, signed this summer, encompasses one DriX USV and an innovative Universal Deployment System specially designed for OECI. The system can launch and recover USV and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV). The contractors anticipate the deployment of the autonomous system at sea by June next year.
The Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute selected the vessel for its mission endurance, offshore sea keeping ability, and its ability to operate at high speed.
The autonomous surface vessel has an endurance of 10 days and sails at a speed of 14 knots. The vessel has outstanding seakeeping capabilities and takes the industry of surface drones several steps further. DriX has the capability to conduct many successful operations ranging from subsea positioning to bathymetry missions. Even though the ASV was developed initially to target the civilian market, Ixblue believes it can be deployed on the battlefield as well.
“The ability to launch and recover unmanned surface vessels as well as other autonomous systems like AUVs from the same launch and recovery system allows us to support a range of collaborative ocean exploration operations from a single research vessel,” said Larry Mayer, Director of the Center of Coastal and Ocean Mapping and the University of New Hampshire’s co-PI on the Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute. “With these collaborative, multi-vehicle operations, we hope to greatly expand the footprint and efficiency of ocean exploration.”
The Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute was founded in May 2019 by NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) and hosted at the University of Rhode Island in collaboration with the University of New Hampshire, the University of Southern Mississippi, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the not-for-profit Ocean Exploration Trust. The consortium will focus on maintaining healthy oceans and sustainably manage marine resources by extending NOAA’s reach and capabilities for its ocean exploration portfolio.
“We look forward to our continuous partnership and to helping them expand the development and operations of unmanned maritime systems in the U.S. coastal and world’s ocean waters,” said Marine Slingue, VP at iXblue, as he thanked the NOAA.
