Spanish company Indra has secured a €30m contract from the Spanish Ministry of Defence to upgrade its Chinook CH-47F simulation system.
The upgrade is expected to make the Spanish simulation center one of the most advanced in the world for this type of aircraft. The upgrade of the Chinook CH-47F Simulators will consist of an FMS (Full Mission Simulator), the FTD (Flight Training Device), and the CBTs (Computer Based Trainer) at the Helicopter Simulation Center (CESIHEL) of the Armed Forces Flight Academy (ACAVIET), located at the Colmenar Viejo Base.
Indra and the Spanish Army will replicate the new F version of the Chinook following the same design strategy they have used in other simulation systems such as the NH90 and the Tigre: using real teams to attain the greatest realism in training exercises, which means ensuring the future upgrades of the simulators are consistent with the next generation of the aircraft themselves, and having network simulation architecture based on standard HLA, which allows joint tactical mission training from several simulators at once located in different bases and utilizing multiple platforms (Tigre, Cougar, EC135 and NH90).
The upgraded systems will include a technology introducing a fourth infra-red light channel known as 4LED projection system. This system will allow pilots to train in the simulation using their own night-vision goggles (NVG). The new system will improve visual quality, throwing the pilots into a higher reality parallel thanks to high-definition land, urban, and habitat modeling.
Training with such upgraded systems will save up to 40% of the real flight time crews need to ensure proper training, instruction and advanced tactical skill development.
The Chinook CH-47F is one of the most powerful transport helicopters in the world, with a 12-ton loading capacity and capability to transport dozens of soldiers. It contains a fully integrated, digital cockpit management system, Common Avionics Architecture System (CAAS) Cockpit, and advanced cargo-handling capabilities that complement the aircraft’s mission performance and handling characteristics. Many countries have been keen on upgrading their Chinook fleet to extend their service life.
Indra is also looking into the possibility of providing the Spanish Ministry of Defence with new systems, including an electronic defence system and a Mission-AMPS System.
