In a video posted on social media last week, PT Lundin Industry Invest has revealed what appears to be the first prototype of the X-18 Tank Boat, also known as “Antasena.”
The video, which was posted on March 28, was made during an official visit from the Indonesian Ministry of Defense to the PT Lundin Industry Invest shipyard in Banyuwangi, East Java, on March 25.
Sources informed GBP Aerospace & Defence that the boat, which was first shown as a full size mock-up during Indo Defence Expo in 2016, is poised to be launched by the end of April.
There is a notable difference between the mock-up and the prototype build, however. While the mock-up was shown with a John Cockerill’s (previously CMI Defence) 3105 turret armed with a 105 mm high velocity cannon, a John Cockerill 3030 remote controlled turret armed with 30 mm autocannon is now in its place.
The 18,7 meters long, 7,5 meters wide boat is also armed with two 12,7 mm heavy machine guns, as well as the option to carry a RBS-70 anti aircraft missile launcher on its rear deck. Inside its double hull, it also has the capability to carry 60 personnel or 20 fully armed soldiers.
Built almost entirely with carbon fiber lined with fire retardant material, the 40-ton boat is also protected with armor in critical places. During Indo Defence 2016, it was indicated that the armor plating will be able to withstand 7,62 mm to 12,7 mm caliber projectiles or rated with STANAG 4569 level 3 standard.
Powered by two 1200 HP diesel engines driving two water jets, the boat can reach a maximum speed of 40 knots. Its fuel capacity is enough for it to reach 600 nautical miles range at 9 knots cruising speed.
As a joint project between PT Lundin Industry Invest and several Indonesian state-owned enterprises in which PT Pindad (Persero) acts as the lead integrator, the X-18 Tank Boat Antasena is projected to be used by the Indonesian army (TNI-AD) to support their “ralasuntai” operational units. “Ralasuntai” is the TNI-AD abbreviation for the swamp, sea, river and beach; the boat is likely to be deployed to patrol and to secure the interior rivers to the coastal areas.
PT Lundin Industry Invest with its trade name as “North Sea Boats” is an Indonesia-based shipyard with offices in Singapore and Sweden. It has produced numerous boats for military and coast guard purposes that have been exported to several countries.
