ROKN UPGRADING AW159 HELICOPTERS

Our Bureau - : Oct 21, 2021 - : 7:18 am

The Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) is upgrading its fleet of eight Leonardo AW159 helicopters to improve operational communication and enhance interoperability between RoK and its allies. The programme was launched earlier this year and ‘the modification ensures the RoKN AW159 fleet continue to maintain its role as the ‘tip of the spear’, company officials tell Daily News. Leonardo has a technical support team permanently based alongside the RoKN, who will work in conjunction with the RoKN to upgrade all eight helicopters in Korea. In the heavier class, we see opportunities for both dual-use and specialized military aircraft for para-public and military customers. Leonardo is also proposing the AW149 to meet South Korean requirements due to its high payload capacity and long range coupled with lower operational costs as compared to larger and heavier platforms. Being a new generation platform, the AW149 also offers high growth potential and customization levels.
