On 14 February, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Defence Minister Richard Marles announced in parliament they had received the final version of the Defence Strategic Review. The review examined the force posture, structure and capabilities of the Australian Defence Force, viewed in light of a changing strategic environment due to factors like a militaristic China and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Albanese said, ‘The Defence Strategic Review will help prepare Australia to effectively respond to the changing regional and global strategic environment, and ensure Defence’s capability and structure is fit for purpose and delivers the greatest return on investment.’
The DSR took six months to write, and it was authored by former defence minister Professor Stephen Smith, and former chief of the Defence Force Angus Houston.
More than 150 individuals and experts provided input. These included Department of Defence officials, Australian Defence Force personnel, defence industry, think tanks and academics, state and territory representatives, and other interest groups. In addition, there were more than 360 submissions from the general public and other interested parties.
Defence Minister Richard Males noted: ‘The Defence Strategic Review is an ambitious and extensive examination of our strategic circumstances, and will underpin our defence policy for decades to come. Australia must be resolute in its responsibility to safeguard our region and keep adversaries further from our shores.’
Details of the review were first announced on 3 August 2022. The Albanese government will now consider the report and its recommendations. The review is expected to inform and sway a number of future acquisition programs in Australia’s military.
