Aselsan’s Gokdeniz CIWS Integrated on MİLGEM-5 Warship

Turkish defence firm Aselsan’s Gokdeniz close-in weapon system (CIWS) has been integrated into the MİLGEM-5 Ship after the factory acceptance tests were completed. Aselsan announced in May, that it had successfully completed the factor acceptance tests for the maritime CIWS. Aselsan’s Chairman of the Board and General Manager Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün noted that the GÖKDENİZ System was developed to meet the needs of the Turkish Naval Forces Command, with the firm’s deep experience and know-how in near-field air defense. He further emphasised that the Gokdeniz is produced entirely with domestic and national solutions. “The Gokdeniz  system has not only eliminated foreign dependency; It has performed much better than the equivalent foreign systems.”

Prof. Dr. Görgün said, “The Gokdeniz  Close Air Defence System stands out as a point defense system that can destroy anti-ship missiles targeting the ship it is stationed on.” The Gokdeniz CIWS is being integrated on the Turkish Navy’s Istanbul Class Frigates, which is the second phase of the MILGEM programme for four warships. The Gokdeniz CIWS can effectively perform shipborne defence against helicopter, aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and surface vehicles threats. It can also defend against anti-ship missiles. Company officials say that they are confident of the export prospects of the Gokdeniz CIWS as it offers superior features compared its competitors on the international market.

The Korkut and Gokdeniz weapon systems use Aselsan’s Atom 35 mm particulate ammunition, which create a dense cloud of particles by exploding in front of the target thanks to a precise time-programmed fuse. This feature enables barrelled weapons such as Gokdeniz to demonstrate high-accuracy and efficiency against small and fast air targets.

An increasing number of export customers have already opted for the Gokdeniz  CIWS, which has already been selected by Turkmenistan for its largest warship,’ Deniz Han’, designed by Turkish shipyard Dearsan Shipyard and built in Turkmenistan in a joint venture (JV) between Gülsan and Dearsan Shipyard. The Pakistan Navy is another Gokdeniz CIWS customer having installed them on its Babur-Class (MILGEM) multi-mission corvettes. The Gokdeniz CIWS will also be integrated on the Turkish Navy’s Istanbul Class Frigates, which is the second phase of the MILGEM programme for four warships.

Aselsan tested the Gokdeniz CIWS prototype on a Turkish Navy ship in May 2018, wherein a high speed target drone having a speed greater than 180 m/s was used to represent an antiship missile. It can engage targets in sea-skimming scenarios and offers autonomous target detection, tracking and firing with the ability to destroy targets at long-range. The system with the automatic link less ammunition feed mechanism allows loading both HEI and airburst ammunition at the same time and switching between ammunition types as needed. In addition to anti-ship missiles,

The Gokdeniz CIWS is one of several products offered by Aselsan for the export market. In 2022, Aselsan exported its products to three new countries for the first time. The number of countries that have ordered defence equipment from Aselsan in the last four years has reached 81 with the addition of 18 new countries. Aselsan now has export orders in the pipeline worth US$1 billion and over the last four years has presented 50 different products, which were never sold abroad before in the international arena
