Indonesian Bakamla to Arm All Patrol Ships

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Dec 30, 2023 - : 6:49 pm

The Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Badan Keamanan Laut – Bakamla) is planning to equip its whole fleet of patrol ships with weapons. This was expressed by the head of the agency in Jakarta on Friday (Dec. 29).

“In the future, we will also equip all ships with weapons,” said Vice Admiral Irvansyah, head of Bakamla. His remark follows the successful firing test of Aselsan’s SMASH 30mm naval cannons onboard three of four 48-meter class patrol ships under the agency’s service. The test was conducted offshore of Petong island, Batam on 24th December.

“(The test onboard) three ships were successful, one still needs improvement (since) the electronics were not functioning properly. Maybe at the beginning of next year, we will carry out another trial.” He said.

He further said that the agency is also planning to equip its patrol ships with laboratories to conduct onboard testing for substances such as narcotics, minerals, and coal. “So there will be no need to bring the ship that we are inspecting to port first, consuming time, fuel, and everything.” He added.

Established in 1972 as the Bakamla (Badan Koordinasi Keamanan Laut / Maritime Security Coordinating Board) before being reorganized and renamed as Bakamla in 2014, the agency is tasked to conduct security and safety patrols in the territorial waters of Indonesia and the jurisdiction of Indonesia.

To date, Bakamla has around 32 ships and boats operational under its service, with a plan to add more ships in the coming years. This also includes one large patrol vessel that Japan will build for the agency as a grant aid which was announced on 16 December this year.
