Airbus A350-1000 Flies With SAF at Singapore Airshow

Airbus is bringing its newest A350-1000 widebody aircraft to the Singapore Airshow, where it will be featured in the flying display from February 20th to 22nd.

The A350 is being powered for the flying displays with a 35% blend of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), supplied by Shell Aviation and certified via the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) EU requirements. The SAF component was produced via the HEFA-SPK pathway from the feedstock of used cooking oil and tallow. The SAF refueling was performed at the Changi Airport, in association with ST-Airport Services, Changi Airport Group, and SATS.

SAF plays a crucial role in the aerospace industry’s journey towards decarbonization, offering an average 80% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels. Airbus aircraft are already equipped to operate with up to 50% SAF, with plans to achieve compatibility with up to 100% SAF by 2030.

The A350, powered by Rolls-Royce’s latest generation engines, boasts a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft of similar size, contributing significantly to environmental sustainability.

Capable of flying up to 9,700 nautical miles non-stop, the A350 is in service with 40 airlines globally, including 17 in the Asia-Pacific region, mainly for intercontinental routes. Notably, Singapore Airlines operates the A350 on the world’s longest commercial route between Singapore and New York, with plans to extend its range, including the Sydney to London route ordered by Qantas.

At the Singapore Airshow 2024, the company will be a prominent exhibitor, showcasing its comprehensive range of products and services spanning commercial aircraft, helicopters, defense, and space markets. Highlights include a static display featuring the A330neo widebody aircraft, an A400M military airlifter, an H145M full-scale mock-up, and an exclusive ACH130 Aston Martin helicopter. Additionally, visitors can explore the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s H225M medium-lift helicopter and the A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) up close.
