Rolls-Royce Begins Pearl 10X Engine Flight Testing

Rolls-Royce announced that the company has begun flight testing its latest aero engine the Pearl 10X on its dedicated Boeing 747 flying testbed on Wednesday (Apr. 3). Designed for the business aviation sector, this engine has been exclusively selected by Dassault to power its new flagship aircraft, the Falcon 10X.

“We are excited to enter into this important next phase of the engine development programme with the start of our flight test campaign. All the tests completed to date confirm the reliability of the engine and show it will meet the performance requirements to power Dassault’s flagship, the Falcon 10X,” said Philipp Zeller, Senior Vice President of Dassault, Business Aviation, Rolls-Royce.

This marks an important milestone for Rolls-Royce in expanding its presence in the business aviation market. The Pearl 10X, the newest addition to the Pearl engine family, is the first Rolls-Royce engine to be chosen for a Dassault business jet, highlighting the company’s position in engine manufacturing for business aviation.

Pilots and flight test engineers based in Tucson, Arizona, USA, will conduct rigorous tests over the next few months. The test programme will include assessing engine performance and handling at various speeds and altitudes, in-flight relight tests, evaluation of the nacelle’s anti-icing system, and fan vibration assessments at different altitudes.

The ground development programme has already tested the new ultra-low emissions ALM combustor and the new accessory gearbox, surpassing target thrust levels on its maiden test run. The Pearl 10X is set to become the most powerful business aviation engine in Rolls-Royce’s portfolio.

The programme has progressed swiftly, accumulating over 2,300 testing hours on both the Advance 2 demonstrator and the Pearl 10X engine configuration.

Featuring the Advance2 engine core, the Pearl 10X delivers over 18,000lbf of thrust while offering a 5% higher efficiency compared to the previous generation of Rolls-Royce business aviation engines. The engine also features low noise and low emissions performance, making it a more suitable engine for premium airport accessibility, ultra-long-range connections, and near-supersonic travel.
