TAI Highlights KAAN, T625 Gokbey Helicopter, Other Products

The Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) is highlighting its 5th Generation Jet Fighter KAAN, as well as its T625 Gokbey Helicopter by displaying a full scale model of the rotorcraft on the company’s booth at DSA 2024.

The 12-seat capacity light utility helicopter has been developed since 2018 and the first two production units is scheduled to be delivered to the Turkish Ministry of Interior and the Health Ministry in June this year.

“One transport version for the Ministry of Interior, and one air ambulance version for the Health Ministry,” said Ahmet Fendoglu, TAI Chief Marketing Operations, Asia Region.

Speaking about ATAK helicopters, he explained the differences between the two versions displayed on TAI’s booth. The T929 ATAK 2, which has just performed first flight in April 2023, is a heavy attack helicopter comparable to the US-made AH-64 Apache. It will soon enter service with the Turkish Army in 2025.

The T129 ATAK (or ATAK 1) on the other hand, has been produced since 2009 and saw active service with the Turkish Army, as well as being exported to the Philippines and Nigeria.

“All of our projects, we are open to partnerships. So if we want to build this together, you will have the economy of scale, the cost will come down,” ge said, commenting on Turkiye’s 5th generation jet fighter, KAAN, which took its first flight in February 2024. Reports indicated that TAI is offering Malaysia if the Southeast Asian country is interested in joining the project.

“Also, we are not looking at Malaysia as just a customer, but as brothers as both countries’ relationship is very close. That’s why we’ve also opened a Malaysia office in 2022 which right now is employing over 120 personnel. The Malaysian engineers are the ones developing the flight control system for our Hurkus trainer aircraft.”

“So yes, we want to keep working together including in this (KAAN) project,” he concluded.
