AirFi Marks 50 AirFi LEO Installations in Early 2024

Our Bureau - : May 21, 2024 - : 10:39 pm

AirFi has announced that its AirFi LEO low-Earth orbit in-flight connectivity will be installed on 50 aircraft during the first quarter of 2024. This development marks a significant milestone for the company as it expands its presence in the commercial aviation sector.

The system is currently being tested by VietJet, a low-cost carrier based in Hanoi, as part of an agreement made public at the 2024 Singapore Air Show. Additionally, other undisclosed airlines are implementing the technology across various aircraft types, including Airbus, Boeing, ATR, and Embraer models. More details about these installations will be released in the future.

“We are both encouraged and humbled by the interest the market has shown in AirFi LEO,” said Job Heimerikx, CEO at AirFi. “Our proposition with LEO, that clients can achieve 90% of the benefits of a full-scale in-flight connectivity service for 10% of the cost, has clearly struck a chord with airlines across the globe – and not just those in the low-cost sector.”

“The business case for AirFi LEO is truly compelling and return on investment is near instantaneous thanks to the prevention of revenue loss that can be achieved through online payment processing” Heimerikx continued. “We have always believed that the industry needs a smart alternative to costly broadband IFC installations. The increasing rate of installations we’re seeing for AirFi LEO serves as proof that we are providing just the right solution.”

The system operates on the Iridium Certus network and features a patented window-mounted antenna that provides low latency global coverage. Installation is straightforward, requiring no drilling into the aircraft fuselage, and can be completed overnight, thus avoiding additional ground time and extra drag on the aircraft.

Airlines equipped with AirFi LEO can offer passengers access to social messaging services, either free or for a fee, allowing them to stay in touch with people on the ground. Additionally, the system enables crew members to communicate with the ground for operational and customer service purposes.
