Indonesia Begins Construction of Second Red-White Frigate

PT PAL Indonesia conducted a steel-cutting ceremony for the Red-White Frigate (Indonesian: Fregat Merah Putih / FMP) at its facility in Surabaya, East Java on Wednesday (Jun 5). This event marked the beginning of the construction of the second vessel in this class, following the ongoing construction of the first vessel since December 2022.

“The production process, including testing (HAT & SAT), is being carried out by PT PAL personnel. This ship will be the largest and most sophisticated combatant vessel ever built in Indonesia,” stated Iqbal Fikri, COO of PT PAL Indonesia.

“Both the first and second Red-White Frigates will be equipped with more weapons than initially planned,” he added.

The design of the Red-White Frigate is derived from Babcock’s Arrowhead 140 frigate, itself based on Denmark’s Iver Huitfeldt-class frigate. The frigate measures 140 metres in length, with a beam of 19.75 metres, and a displacement of around 6,000 tonnes. Both vessels will be powered by four diesel engines, each delivering 8.2MW of power, enabling them to reach speeds exceeding 28 knots, and a maximum range of approximately 9,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 18 knots. Each ship will also have an endurance of 21 days and will be crewed by 143 personnel.

Each frigate will be armed with two 76 mm main guns, 24 medium-range Surface to Air Missiles (SAM), 32 long-range SAMs, and 16 Surface-to-Surface Missiles (SSM) configured with a Vertical Launch System (VLS). They will also feature twin torpedo launchers for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), along with a hangar and helipad capable of accommodating an ASW helicopter weighing up to 15 tonnes.

According to PT PAL’s schedule, the first Red-White Frigate is set to be launched in 2025, with the second following in December 2026.
