British cargo airline One Air has added a third Boeing 747-400 freighter to its fleet, aiming to address increasing demand for cargo capacity between Asia and Europe. This expansion comes as the airline enters its second year of operations.
The newly leased Boeing 747-400ERF, secured through a five-year agreement with AeroTransCargo FZE, completed its first flight for One Air from Hong Kong to East Midlands Airport. This aircraft, a Boeing-built freighter, is equipped with both a nose and side door for loading, offering a payload capacity of up to 124,000kgs.
One Air began operations in July 2023 after obtaining its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the UK Civil Aviation Authority. In December, the airline added a second Boeing 747-400 to support its expanding routes between China, Hong Kong, and Europe. Over its first year, the airline has operated flights from several UK airports, including London Heathrow, East Midlands, Birmingham, and Glasgow Prestwick, among others.
The airline’s freighters have also served destinations across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, such as Almaty, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Jinan, and Singapore. Recently, One Air has been running seven weekly flights from Hong Kong to Europe under a contract carrying general cargo, alongside its ad hoc charter services.
Paul Bennett, Chairman and CEO of One Air, commented, “Our business case was always based on the high demand we saw for a British cargo airline, and this is being borne out by the volume of flights we are operating. The arrival of our third 747-400 and its increased capacity and capability will enable us to provide more availability to our growing client base. We are also pressing ahead with our future fleet plans and expect to add at least one more freighter in the first half of 2025 based on our current growth plan.”
To support its new aircraft, One Air has recruited 27 additional crew and support staff, bringing the total workforce at its UK headquarters to over 125 employees. The airline has also started regular operations from East Midlands Airport, which offers favourable conditions for cargo flights, including available slots and fewer restrictions.
