AirAsia and Airbus have agreed on a partnership aimed at improving aviation sustainability in Southeast Asia, with a focus on reducing carbon emissions. Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the two companies will collaborate on exploring Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production and improvements in air traffic management (ATM).
The partnership will explore the decentralised production of SAF using alternative feedstock and technology in Southeast Asia, with the goal of supporting SAF supply in the region. The MoU also includes efforts to improve ATM systems to reduce CO2 emissions, with a focus on adapting technologies developed under the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) Project to ASEAN airspace.
AirAsia’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Yap Mun Ching, highlighted the airline’s role in the partnership, stating: “AirAsia will be a key partner of Airbus in ASEAN to test the feasibility of SAF output developed using alternative feedstock and technologies, as well as ground-breaking ATM initiatives supported by Airbus’ innovation teams. As a regional carrier based in five ASEAN countries, we bring unparalleled operational experience in the region to complement Airbus’ technological expertise.” She also noted that upgrading the airline’s fleet to more fuel-efficient models is a key step toward reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
Airbus Chief Sustainability Officer, Julie Kitcher, emphasised the importance of collaboration: “Airbus is contributing to the decarbonisation of aviation around the world. That means working with our customers in every region, looking at all solutions available today and collaborating on research for future technologies. AirAsia is a key partner in the ASEAN region and we are excited to work with the airline to explore operational efficiency levers, including air traffic management and scaling up the production and distribution of SAF.”
The airline has ordered 361 Airbus A321 aircraft as part of its strategy to reduce CO2 emissions by 2035. By upgrading its fleet, the airline aims to reduce emissions by 10%, with additional reductions expected from operational efficiencies and SAF. In 2023, AirAsia’s efficiency measures saved 130,000 tonnes of CO2 and contributed to cost savings of USD 40 million.
The partnership sets the stage for future projects that aim to improve the environmental performance of the aviation sector in Southeast Asia.
