It’s Official: Azerbaijan Gets JF-17 Fighters

Azerbaijan has taken delivery of three JF-17C (Block-III) multirole fighter aircraft from Pakistan, setting rumours of the purchase at rest.

On Sep.25, on the sidelines of the 5th Anniversary ADEX2024, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev was presented the aircraft, at Heydar Aliyev International Airport.

It was unofficially reported earlier this year that Pakistan inked a US$1.6 billion deal to export JF-17C Block-III warplanes to Azerbaijan, the country’s largest order to supply defence equipment abroad.

As part of the agreement, Azerbaijan would receive 8 JF-17C Block-III aircraft from Pakistan besides ammunition, including air-to-surface missiles.
The South Asian sovereign state would also train Azerbaijani military personnel in air-combat.

These advanced, lightweight, all-weather aircraft, designed for both day and night operations, were developed as a joint venture between Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Kamra and Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation of China.
The aircraft have already been integrated into the arsenal of Azerbaijan’s Air Force, an official at Azerbaijan MoD informed.

Defense Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Colonel General Zakir Hasanov reported to Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev. Azerbaijan’s Defense Minister and Chairman of the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex Board, Air Vice Marshal Hakim Raza provided details about the aircraft’s tactical and technical specifications, operational guidelines, and key performance indicators.

The JF-17C (Block-III) is a single-engine multirole combat aircraft known for its air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities, as well as its high maneuverability at medium and low altitudes, making it notable for its effective firepower.
With this Azerbaijan joins Myanmar and Nigeria as the other two nations that have acquired JF-17 Thunder jets from Pakistan.
