Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik ve Ticaret A.Ş. (STM) and Bahçeşehir University (BAU) are set to develop ocean sensing systems aimed at reducing Türkiye’s reliance on foreign technologies in this field. These systems will be created entirely with domestic resources and will play a crucial role in both scientific research and military applications. The project is supported under the Technology-Oriented Industrial Move (HAMLE) Program, led by the Ministry of Industry and Technology.
The collaboration involves the development of advanced Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) Probes and expendable oceanographic devices, with sensors designed to gather data on the physical properties of seawater. These devices will be utilised in various areas, including submarine operations, civil maritime activities, and environmental studies.
The CTD Probe will measure seawater’s conductivity, temperature, and pressure, which will allow calculations of salinity, water density, and underwater sound speed. These metrics are essential for submarines, as the data collected will help optimise the performance of sonar systems by mapping the propagation of underwater sound waves. In addition to the CTD Probes, the project will produce single-use devices that measure temperature and sound speed at various depths.
These systems are designed to support both military and civilian operations, such as assessing underwater resources and environmental conditions. STM and BAU aim to enhance Türkiye’s oceanographic capabilities, contributing to the national ‘Blue Homeland’ doctrine, which seeks to strengthen the country’s influence over its maritime zones.
A key goal of the project is to eliminate Türkiye’s dependency on imported oceanographic devices. Özgür Güleryüz, General Manager of STM, emphasised the importance of domestic R&D efforts, stating:
“Being a key player in the Turkish Defense Industry, it is a responsibility for us to invest on R&D of systems not produced in Turkey in collaboration with universities. In the past, we developed the CTD Probe System jointly with Bahçeşehir University making maximum use of national capabilities in the submarine technologies field. Now, we shall also develop expendable devices measuring temperature and sound speed profiles as well as the sensors of the CTD Probe system.”
Güleryüz also highlighted the risks of relying on foreign technologies, especially during periods of embargoes or restrictions, which can delay projects. He added:
“For this reason, we are concentrating our effort in R&D on critical systems that are not produced domestically.”
The oceanographic devices developed through this collaboration are expected to be used in both national and international projects. The Turkish Naval Forces Command is likely to incorporate these systems into future operations, while they will also find applications in scientific research, including studies of Türkiye’s maritime regions and underwater mapping.
Güleryüz concluded by congratulating the teams from STM and BAU, stating that their efforts in developing these critical systems will contribute to both military and civilian sectors.
