Meteksan Unveils Radar System HELRAD

Our Bureau - : Oct 24, 2024 - : 1:44 am

Meteksan Defence’s HELRAD Maritime Search and Weather Radar (MSWR) for helicopters, officially launched at the ongoing SAHA Expo 2024, is designed for maritime reconnaissance and surveillance on rotary-wing platforms.

According to the company, HELRAD was initially developed for the Turkish Coast Guard’s helicopter platforms. The radar, designed to enhance maritime security, can accommodate different installation configurations in helicopters, considering the user’s needs and platform constraints.

The radar cross-references detections over the water with data from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) to establish contacts and automatically tracks up to 200 targets, providing their course and speed information. In addition to ensuring maritime security, the radar can also be used to combat smuggling, and monitor irregular migration.

HELRAD can filter out contacts without AIS information and mark them as suspicious on the operator console, thus enabling the rapid and effective detection of any potential threats at sea. To meet diverse operational requirements, it also offers several usage modes. While the Small Target Mode is for detecting small targets at sea, the Short-range Mode is for detailed surveillance over short distances. Long-range Mode offers comprehensive surveillance over wider areas. Weather Detection Mode is for monitoring weather conditions and precipitation.

According to the company, the radar’s “multi-sector coverage” feature allows it to transmit signals only to relevant areas. It can also be used for terrain mapping, and identifying surface objects like landmasses. HELRAD is fully qualified to meet MIL-STD standards.

“HELRAD is designed to strengthen the security of our coasts, standing out with its advanced radar technology and user-friendly features,” said Adil BAKTIR, President of Meteksan Defence. “We believe HELRAD, with its automatic target tracking and suspicious contact detection capabilities, will revolutionize maritime security as a cost-effective and easy-to-maintain domestic radar solution. It will facilitate the operations of rotary-wing platform crews and help create a safer environment along our coasts.”
