Schiebel’s CAMCOPTER S-300 Chosen for European Defence Project

Schiebel, a member of the SEACURE consortium led by Thales, has been awarded a grant under the European Defence Fund’s initiative to advance unmanned systems. The company will utilise its CAMCOPTER S-300 as the platform for developing anti-submarine and seabed warfare solutions.

The SEACURE project, involving 35 companies from 13 European nations, is focused on enhancing anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and seabed warfare (SBW) capabilities. The project aims to safeguard critical maritime infrastructure by leveraging unmanned air, surface, and underwater systems for the detection, classification, identification, and tracking of underwater threats in complex environments.

The CAMCOPTER S-300, with a maximum take-off weight of 700 kg, offers more than 24 hours of endurance with advanced imaging and radar systems, or around 6 hours when carrying a 250 kg payload. The drone is the first operational vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) system in its class to deliver such performance. The project is set to conclude with large-scale sea trials by 2028.

“We have been working successfully with Thales on various ASW solutions for the S-100 since our first participation at the NATO exercise REPMUS in 2022,” said Hans Georg Schiebel, Chairman of the Schiebel Group. “Due to its longer endurance and higher payload capacity, the S-300 opens up a multitude of new possibilities for ASW and SBW. The SEACURE project aligns perfectly with our S-300 development roadmap and we’re proud to be part of such a significant project,” he added.

The CAMCOPTER S-300 UAS is designed to meet the needs of users requiring long range, extended endurance, and heavy payload capabilities. It can carry up to 250 kg with an endurance of up to 24 hours, making it ideal for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) tasks. The S-300 is also capable of cargo delivery missions or deploying sonobuoys for ASW operations. Its three-bladed foldable rotor allows for easy storage and maintenance in confined spaces like ship hangars, and it can be controlled using the same Ground Control Station as the smaller CAMCOPTER S-100.
