日本の防衛省はトマホーククルーズミサイルの大量購入を検討している。浜田防衛大臣が二月に日本はトマホークミサイルの購入に前向きであるが、将来米国側から発表があるとした。
最大400のクルーズミサイルが購入可能と語った。 防衛省は現在米国側と協議中としている。トマホークミサイルの正式な数は発表していない。
千マイル離れた標的を攻撃できるトマホーククルーズミサイルは、船舶と潜水艦から可能なため厳重に守られている空域でも使用可能な精密武器である。最新の機種はブロック IV Tactical Tomahawk (通常TACTOM)であるが、標的を数時間空中を旋回しつつデータリンク経由の指令に対応して攻撃を仕掛けることができる。
米海軍はトマホークミサイルの再認識と近代化を2020年から進めてい、 使用寿命を15年間延長している。ブロックVシリーズの新しい機種であるトマホークミサイルには海上攻撃能力もしくは複合的乗数効果弾頭へのアップグレードがなされる。また、レイゼオンミサイル&ディフェンス社は全てのブロックV機種製品へ誘導と通信のアップグレードを与える
