한국이 2033년까지 국내 최초의 경 항공모함을 구축하고 배치하는 데 필요한 핵심 기술을 개발할 계획이라고 한국방위사업청이 밝혔다. 방위사업청의 발표에 따르면, 한국이 개발 예정인 4만 톤의 경 항공모함은 “전방위 위협에 적극 대응”할 것이며 프로젝트 예산은 2조원(17억 4,000만 달러)에 달한다.
방위사업청은 2024년까지 핵심 기술을 개발할 계획이다. 방위사업청, 부산대학교, LIG 넥스원을 포함한 7개 기관이 기술 개발에 참여할 것이라고 현지 언론은 보도했다. 방위사업청은 “작년 7월에 개발 요건이 결정된 후, 민간, 공공, 군사 부문의 전문가들이 개발해야 하는 핵심 기술을 파악했다”고 말하고, 다른 항공모함과는 달리 경 항공모함은 수직 이착륙기(VTOL)를 사용하기 때문이라고 이유를 밝혔다.
현지 언론은 한국이 두 가지 유형의 항공모함을 개발하는 계획의 타당성을 연구 중이라고 보도했다. 고정익 및 회전익 항공기 40기를 탑재할 수 있는 7만 톤의 중급 항공모함과 고정익 12기, 회전익 8기 항공기와 승무원 720명을 수용할 수 있는 4만 톤 규모의 항공모함이 이 계획에 포함된다.
