Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB), part of EDGE Group that specialises in the design, construction, and maintenance of naval vessels, has marked a significant milestone with the launch of the first FALAJ 3 class Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) at its shipyard. This launch represents a key phase in fulfilling the contract with the UAE Ministry of Defence (MOD) aimed at bolstering the nation’s naval defence capabilities.
The ceremony, held under the patronage of Rear Admiral Pilot Staff Major General Sheikh Saeed bin Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, Commander of the UAE Naval Forces, was attended by various dignitaries, military officials, and senior leaders from both EDGE and ADSB.
The FALAJ 3 class vessel has a length overall (LOA) of 60 metres, with a moulded breadth of 9.5 metres and a depth of 4.45 metres. It features a moulded draft of 2.6 metres, with a maximum draft at the propeller of 3.4 metres. The vessel has a full-load displacement of 641 tonnes and can reach a maximum speed of 26 knots. It has an operational range of 2,000 nautical miles when travelling at 16 knots, and is designed to accommodate a complement of 39 personnel.
The vessel’s advanced sensor suite is managed by the ATHENA C Mk2 Combat Management System (CMS), with the primary radar system being the Kronos Naval High Power (Kronos NV HP) 3D multifunction radar from Leonardo. The radar, operating in the C-band, features an actively electronically scanned array antenna, offering enhanced tracking and detection capabilities.
In terms of armament, the vessel is equipped with a Leonardo 76/62 mm Super Rapido gun, along with two electro-optical fire control systems, each guiding a Halcon LOGIR (Low-cost Guided Imaging Rocket). Additionally, the FALAJ 3 class will feature two Rheinmetall Defence MASS (Multi Ammunition Softkill System) decoy launchers.
For defence against multiple simultaneous threats, the vessel is equipped with VL MICA launchers and the Raytheon Mk 49 RAM (Rolling Airframe Missile) system, providing robust protection against air and asymmetric missile threats.
David Massey, CEO of ADSB, said: “The launch of the first FALAJ3 vessel reinforces ADSB’s expertise in shipbuilding and represents a major step forward in delivering cutting-edge, highly sophisticated vessels equipped with the latest mission systems and advanced armament. This addition to ADSB’s capabilities and extensive product portfolio underscores our commitment to supporting the strategic objectives of the Ministry of Defence. As we deepen this partnership, we remain focused on driving innovation and excellence to meet the evolving needs of the nation’s defence landscape.”
