Our Bureau - : Dec 19, 2024 - : 9:57 pm

Aer Lingus, Ireland's national airline, has taken delivery of its first A321XLR aircraft, becoming the second airline globally and within the International Airlines Group (IAG) to operate this model. The aircraft, powered by CFM LEAP-1A engines, departed from Airbus' production facility in Hamburg, Germany, on 18 December and landed at Dublin Airport, the airline's home base.

The A321XLR has a two-class seating configuration with 16 full-flat Business Class seats and 168 Economy Class seats, accommodating a total of 184 passengers. This is the first aircraft in the Aer Lingus fleet to feature the Airbus Airspace Cabin, which includes XL overhead bins providing 60% more storage space compared to earlier models. Passengers will also benefit from in-seat connectivity and an advanced lighting system aimed at enhancing comfort.

Aer Lingus plans to utilise the A321XLR to expand its transatlantic operations, enabling direct flights to destinations beyond the US East Coast and Canada. New routes will include cities such as Nashville and Indianapolis.

The A321XLR, part of Airbus' A320neo family, offers a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles, 15% more than the A321LR. The aircraft also boasts a 30% reduction in fuel consumption per seat compared to older models, along with lower NOx emissions and noise levels. Airbus has secured over 500 orders for the A321XLR to date.

The A321XLR is compatible with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and aligns with Airbus' goal to make its aircraft 100% SAF-capable by 2030.
