Aeromexico Cites ‘Unprecedented’ Challenges, Files for Bankruptcy

: Jul 3, 2020 - : 2:40 am

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc  on the aviation industry.

Mexico’s flagship airline Aeromexico announced that it had filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States. The carrier will continue flying as it has  applied to start restructuring under Chapter 11.

“Our industry faces unprecedented challenges due to significant declines in demand for air transportation,” CEO Andrés Conesa said in a statement. “We are committed to taking the necessary measures so that we can operate effectively in this new landscape and be well prepared for a successful future when the Covid-19 pandemic is behind us.”

Over the last few months, Aeromexico has grounded part of its fleet. Like many other carriers who have been forced to find alternate methods of revenue, the company announced in March that it would start operating “cargo-only flights for the first time.”

Chile’s LATAM and Colombia’s Avianca have also started bankruptcy proceedings, citing the loss of business from the pandemic.
