The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is calling for a comprehensive missile defence system to safeguard the nation’s territory under its Comprehensive Archipelagic Defence Concept (CADC). General Romeo Brawner Jr., AFP Chief of Staff, highlighted the need for an advanced and layered defence during a statement on Wednesday.
When asked about the potential acquisition of the US-made Medium Range Capability Typhon Missile System as part of the AFP’s ongoing modernisation programme, Brawner confirmed that not just the Typhon, but other missile systems are also being considered. “Not only the Typhon but also other missile systems kasi kailangan natin ng (because we need) comprehensive air defence and maritime defence systems,” Brawner stated.
He stressed the importance of retaining the Typhon system in the Philippines, despite China’s request for its removal, which Beijing claims could destabilise peace in the region. Brawner said that he wants the Typhoon to stay ‘forever’ in the Philippines. However, the decision on whether to keep the system in place will depend on discussions between the Philippines and the United States via their Mutual Defence Board-Security Board.
Brawner confirmed that a formal request has been made to the US, and the AFP is currently awaiting a response.
The Typhon Missile System is capable of launching Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles and Standard Missile-6, with an estimated range exceeding 1,000 miles. It is presently deployed in northern Luzon as part of the ongoing Salaknib military exercises between Filipino and American forces. The CADC, aimed at bolstering the defence of Philippine territorial integrity and sovereign rights, seeks the acquisition of additional aircraft, ships, and missile systems to enhance its effectiveness.
Brawner further explained that once these assets are in place and fully operational, they would form what he referred to as an “integrated defence” system for the country.
