Aselsan Eyes Asian Market with Growing Defence Portfolio

Our Bureau - : May 5, 2024 - : 8:38 pm

Aselsan is keen to grow its market presence in Malaysia and is participating in the ongoing DSA with a wide portfolio of products on display. The Turkish firm’s strong focus on homegrown R&D resulted in many new products entering the market in 2023 such as the CENK, AKREP and ALPER Radars, YENER Mine Detection System, ASELFLIR-400 Camera, Gözde Guidance Kit, Gökdeniz Air Defence System, ODAKAN camera family. “We are in the final stages of many products that we think will play a game-changing role,” a company official told Daily News, adding, “We have successfully completed the testing phases of many products, and have started mass production for some of them.”

The company is constantly increasing its investments to develop and produce high technology. Last year, Aselsan’s Advanced Materials Facility, Guidance Kit Integration and Production Facility and Electronic Warfare Production and Integration Facility became operational. “We have initiated four more important and major investments in the fields of FLIR camera systems, air defence systems, microelectronics and AESA radar,” the official added.

Preparations for the mass production of the AESA aircraft nose radar have been completed at Aselsan’s technology base in Ankara. The AESA aircraft nose radar is produced with 100 percent national resources, from chip level to final system integration, with zero errors. With the GaN (Gallium Nitrate) chip development and production technology it acquired, Aselsan has reached a level where it can compete with the world’s leading radar companies in terms of technology. Over time, AESA technologies began to be used in all systems developed at Aselsan in the fields of radar, electronic warfare and communications.

Aselsan’s General Manager Ahmet Akyol said that the nose radars with AESA technology will work in F-16 ÖZGÜR, HÜRJET, National Combat Aircraft (KAAN), AKINCI, KIZILELMA and ANKA-3 UAVs. The global market size for fighter jet AESA Nose Radar is estimated to be five billion dollars annually. The company touts its SELFLIR-500 as an outstanding camera, along with other products such as the SIPER long-range air defence system, DÜFAS which is Aselsan’s first over-the-horizon sonar, TOLUN guided munition and autonomous underwater vehicle DERİNGÖZ.

Aselsan ended 2023 with new orders worth US$5 billion and its order backlog is now in excess of US$ 11 billion. The company is rapidly growing defence exports and exported to four new countries for the first time in 2023. It also won a historic export contract worth US$601 million last year, in addition to winning an important tank modernization tender in Chile. Aselsan’s platforms such as the ATAK, Hürkuş, Bayraktar TB2, Anka, MİLGEM, Ejder Yalçın, Kirpi have proved popular both at home and abroad and the company now ranks 47th in the list of the world’s largest defence companies.
