Azerbaijan is keenly looking at opportunities to expand military cooperation with Saudi Arabia.
According to Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defence, both countries are discussing military-to-military, and military-technical cooperation between the two sides. Recently, a delegation headed by Major General Musfer bin Hassan bin Musfer Al-Essa, the director of the General Administration for Morale Affairs and Values Promotion of the Armed Forces of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, visited Azerbaijan.
Colonel Elshad Abilov, head of the Department of Ideological Work and Moral-Psychological Support at the General Staff Department of the Ministry of Defense, welcomed the delegation at the Azerbaijan Army’s Training and Education Center.
During their meetings, both countries addressed the expansion of cooperation in military education, and discussed several issues of mutual interest.
The delegation was given lectures on ‘The Role of National, Moral, Ethical, and Patriotic Values in Enhancing the Moral and Psychological Spirit of Military Personnel.’ They were also briefed on efforts to organize ideological work and train military psychologists.
In April this year, Minister of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Colonel General Zakir Hasanov had met with the custodian of the two Holy Mosques, King of Saudi Arabia Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
They discussed bilateral relations and cooperation areas between the two countries, particularly in the field of defence. Saudi Arabia is also aspiring to localise 50 per cent of its defence spending by 2030, and is looking at bringing together military players from around the world.
Saudi Arabia’s very own international defense exhibition, ‘The World Defense Show’ (WDS) provides a unique platform for the global defense industry to connect and collaborate.
For the first time, Azerbaijan participated in the second edition of the WDS-2024 in Riyadh.
Over 100 defense products manufactured in Azerbaijan were presented at the country’s stand organized by the Ministry of Defense.
Saudi Arabia First to Accept Azerbaijan
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was established on February 24, 1992. The Kingdom was one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Azerbaijan on December 30, 1991. In April 1994, the Azerbaijani Embassy was opened in Riyadh, and since June 1999, the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Baku.
Visit of former Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev in 1994 in Saudi Arabia has opened new opportunities for the development of bilateral relations. During the visit, signed the first General Agreement on cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, investment, technology, culture, youth and sports.
In connection with the aggression of Armenia against Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia has always supported Baku’s position during the voting at the UN General Assembly on “the situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan”, as well as the OIC and on the other international and regional organizations.
