The Malaysian Navy will equip a new class of patrol vessels with BAE Systems’ 57mm Mk3 guns, the company announced Thursday, April 4.

BAE said the $57 million deal will see its naval gun operation in Karlskoga, Sweden, supply six Mk3s to equip a new fleet of Malaysian Navy warships. The ships are known as the Second Generation Patrol Vessel – Littoral Combat Ships (SGPV-LCS).

The first gun will be ready for delivery to the Boustead Naval Shipyard, responsible for building the vessels, in mid-2015. The contract includes ammunition hoists, simulator and initial support.

The BAE deal was awarded by Contraves Advanced Devices.

The Rheinmetall Air Defence and Boustead Heavy Industries joint venture was recently selected to equip the patrol vessels with fire control radars, electro-optical systems and other equipment.

BAE has previously supplied 40mm and 57mm naval guns to Malaysia and has a local joint venture company called BHIC Bofors Asia, which will support delivery of the program, including technology transfer.

Six of the DCNS-designed SGPV-LCS vessels are scheduled to be built over the next few years to bolster Malaysian combat, fisheries, oil and gas platform protection, anti-piracy, and other capabilities.
