Barzan Holdings, the Qatar based defence and high-technology company, is participating as a ‘Bronze Sponsor’ at the ongong Azerbaijan International Defence Exhibition (ADEX) with the aim of deepening its relationship with Azerbaijan.
Barzan Holdings is showcasing a wide-range of sophisticated defence equipment that is well suited to the defence needs of Azerbaijan and can also be offered with high levels of ‘Transfer of Technology’ (ToT).
Speaking to GBP Aerospace & Defence earlier this year, Abdullah Al Khater, Barzan Holdings CEO said, “Barzan Holdings is always exploring new opportunities to advance its objectives and create sustainable value for Qatar and its partners worldwide. In this context, we continue to prioritize partnerships that extend beyond the supply of products and services to forge long-term meaningful connections that lead to productive collaborations on new technological solutions and innovations both in Qatar and overseas.”
Barzan Holdings boasts an impressive portfolio of entities including wholly owned subsidiaries Barzan Maintenance Shield (BMS), Barzan Industrial Group (BIG), the engineering and manufacturing arm, and Barood Ammunition Factory in addition to majority-owned subsidiary Qsur, as well as BINDIG and Rheinmetall Barzan Advanced Technologies (RBAT), joint ventures with Beretta Holding, and German technology group Rheinmetall, respectively. These entities have spearheaded the development of cutting-edge technologies, featuring products ranging from locally manufactured modular weapons by BIG and high-quality small caliber ammunition by Barood, to tactical gear by QSUR, and state-of-art portable weapon systems by BINDIG.
Barzan Holdings was established in 2016, with the aim to first serve the Qatar armed forces. However, in recent the company has rapidly expanded globally with a special focus on countries such as Azerbaijan, which is modernising its armed forces. With the greater need for an independent defence industry, Azerbaijan is looking to establish its own local defence industry and local defence services. This is an area that Barzan Holdings has a lot of experience, having done the same to grow the defence industry in Qatar.
Speaking to GBP Show Daily, a company official said, “we believe that we can bring that experience here and share it with various countries. This will also be an added advantage working with different countries in the region.”
With the current global political situation there has been a positive shift in defence budgets, with countries as far afield as Germany and Japan having raised their defence budgets significantly for example. Such upward shifts in defence spending will lead to growing demand for the defence industry and this is an opportunity for Barzan Holdings to partner with Azerbaijan to grow its partnership and to work closely with them. Qatar is seeking to develop cooperation with Azerbaijan in all political and economic fields and in the defence sector, Barzan Holdings will drive growth.
Turkey and Azerbaijan share a growing political relationship which has helped open the doors for greater defence cooperation. Diplomatic relations between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the State of Qatar was established on September 14, 1994. The Embassy of The Republic of Azerbaijan to the State of Qatar and the Embassy of the State of Qatar to the Republic of Azerbaijan were opened in 2007.
