Budget airline Batik Air Malaysia and its parent company Lion Air Group are set to make Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as central hub for Umrah flights. These two companies are collaborating with travel agents from both Malaysia and Indonesia supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture of Malaysia.
During the airline’s “Engagement Event” on Thursday (Jan. 11), it was revealed that the demand for Umrah flights has surged following the opening of the airline’s direct flight between Kuala Lumpur and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
“This surge underscores Batik Air’s steadfast commitment to addressing the increasing demand and delivering exceptional service to Muslim passengers in Malaysia and Indonesia,” said Batik Air Group Strategy Director Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy. “Our vision extends beyond individual flights, as we plan to integrate […] Jeddah services with feeder services from Lion Air Group affiliate airlines, reinforcing our commitment to seamless travel experiences,” he added.
The event was attended by 100 travel companies in both countries specializing in the Umrah pilgrimage journey.
In response, the Malaysian Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan said that the historic collaboration between Indonesian and Malaysian travel agencies will strengthen the cultural and tourism exchange between the two countries, as well as make Kuala Lumpur become a prime Umrah pilgrimage hub in the region.
“I am confident that this initiative will position Malaysia as a transit point for pilgrims from the Southeast Asian region, including Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, South Korea, and Japan, who want to perform Umrah in the holy city,” he said.
Formerly known as Malindo Air, Batik Air Malaysia is an associate carrier of the Indonesian Lion Air Group headquartered in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. Established in 2012, Malindo Air was rebranded to its current name on 28 April 2022.
With a fleet size of 33 aircraft consisting of Airbus A330, Boeing 737 jets, and ATR 72 turboprops flying no less than 58 local and international routes, the airline opened its direct Kuala Lumpur – Jeddah route in August 2023.
