Boeing Defence is bullish on its market prospect for defense equipment and services, senior company officials informed during a media briefing at the airshow. Boeing views opportunities in the APAC region for maritime domain awareness, with requirements for platforms with range, speed, persistence, and multi-mission capabilities. “Fleet modernization of air forces in the region will also drive growth for the company in the region with upgrades and new aircraft sales,” said Bernd Peters, VP Business Development & Strategy, Boeing Defence, Space, and Security. He added that Boeing offers a large and differentiated portfolio of offerings in the region, with tactical fighters and trainers, strategic lift and tanking, command and control, persistent ISR, autonomous solutions, maritime patrol and ASW, vertical lift, and humanitarian assistance.
The U.S. arms manufacturer said that it views defense opportunities in the region as a US$75 billion market through to 2034. At present, Boeing’s Defence, Space, and Security business has an order backlog of US$59 billion, out of which nearly 1/3rd (29%) are orders from outside of the USA (as of 4Q 2023). Peters said that Boeing views significant opportunities for the AH-64 family of attack helicopters in the region, both for new examples and upgrades. The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) has already confirmed that it will operate its AH-64D attack helicopters well into the future with a Life Extension Programme planned to ensure their availability beyond 2030.
With regards to deals in the region, Torbjorn ‘Turbo’ Peters Sjogren, VP and GM, Government Services, Boeing Global Services, highlighted recent sustainment wins related to a seven-year contract signed to assist the Australian MoD with sustaining their future AH-64E fleet in addition to a CH-47K Chinook Integrated Support Services contract extension. Boeing has also been supporting the Republic of Korea Air Force’s (ROKAF) F-15K fleet through Performance Based Logistics for over 10 years now. This is the second decade of support being provided by Boeing for the ROKAF’s F-15Ks.
Sjogren also highlighted the role of Boeing Global Services in driving mission efficiency and operational readiness of Boeing platforms that are in service in the region. He said geopolitical complexities coupled with demand for advanced military technology were driving the market demand for defense equipment in the region. Sjogren also informed that Boeing has started Autonomous Aircraft Inspection (AAI) technology to scan aircraft exteriors, increasing safety and decreasing downtime. He confirmed that Boeing in partnership with the USAF has tested AAI technology for aircraft testing on the C-17, KC-46, and C-5 aircraft.
