Boeing eyes regional growth (SINGAPORE AIRSHOW 2014 – DAY 2)

: Feb 13, 2014 - : 8:45 pm

Boeing has a broad portfolio on display at this year’s Singapore Air Show. Asian Defence & Diplomacy spoke to Jim Armington, Boeing Defense, Space & Security’s vice president for East Asia & Pacific, and he highlighted first of all the importance of maritime surveillance platforms to the region. The high end is represented by the P-8 Poseidon, with one US Navy example of this maritime patrol aircraft on static display at the show after taking time out from its operational deployment to Okinawa, Japan.

The Bell Boeing MV-22 Osprey is also “well-aligned to the region’s needs” according to Armington. Certainly the Osprey is being marketed hard in Asia, and Japan will be the first Asian customer. The Osprey’s utility was exemplified by its deployment to the Philippines in the wake of last year’s Typhoon Haiyan.

Boeing also has fighters to defend national airspace, with the prime example being the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. In relation to Malaysia’s long-running fighter replacement programme, Boeing’s executive outlined that Boeing was “flexible and patient”. “We take the long-term view,” he added.

There has been no confirmation from the Singapore Ministry of Defence, nor Airbus, that the A330 MRTT has been selected for a Singaporean tanker requirement, and Boeing has not received any notification either according to its management.

Armington stated that Boeing expected “positive growth” in the Asia-Pacific region. The Japanese market is growing annually at about 2-3%, and Southeast Asia at a slightly faster rate, although ASEAN is starting off from a comparatively smaller base.
