BRP Diego Silang Sets Launch for December 2024

The launch of the second Miguel Malvar-class frigate, designated as the future BRP Diego Silang, is set for December 2024, with the delivery of both vessels expected in 2025. This timeline indicates a quicker turnaround for the second ship, as Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) initially planned for its delivery in 2026.

In addition to the corvettes, HHI is anticipated to deliver six HDP-2200 Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), with deliveries commencing in 2026 and projected to be completed by 2028.

HHI is also positioning itself to compete for the Frigate Acquisition Project and intends to submit a bid for the Corvette Phase 2 Acquisition Project, both of which are part of the government’s Re-Horizon 3 programme aimed at bolstering the Philippine Navy’s capabilities.

During discussions with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), HHI presented several designs for consideration, focusing primarily on the HDP-2200 OPV. This vessel is based on the same platform as the Philippine Navy’s variants but features lighter armaments, improved accommodation, and enhanced endurance. The shared platform would facilitate interoperability between the PCG and the Philippine Navy (PN), offering advantages in Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) processes.

Moreover, HHI has confirmed its commitment to providing a 30-year lifetime support service for the Jose Rizal-class frigates, ensuring long-term operational effectiveness and maintenance for the Philippine Navy’s fleet.
