Embraer’s C-390 Millennium is a “very powerful example of success” of the Brazilian defence industry, Marcos Degaut Pontes, secretary of defense products at the Brazilian Ministry of Defense, has said.
“Brazilian defence products are in use in about 130 countries,” Pontes said at the Ministerial Roundtable Meeting held as part of the ongoing Eurasia Airshow. “A very powerful example of success is the multi-mission C-390, which has been just been acquired by Hungary and Portugal. It is one of the most modern aircraft in the world.”
The multi-mission transport aircraft was delivered to the Brazilian Air Force in September last year; the service is expected to add 28 of the type to its fleet. Already operational, the aircraft has been used extensively in recent months in the fight against COVID-19.
In July last year, Portugal became the first export customer of the KC-390, the C-390 Millennium in its air-to-air refueling (AAR) configuration, signing a contract to buy five of the type. Deliveries are scheduled to start in February 2023, at the rate of one per year until 2027.
In November, Embraer announced that it had signed a deal with Hungary to supply two KC-390 aircraft to the Hungarian Defence Forces (HDF). The KC-390 for the HDF will be the first in the world with the Intensive Care Unit in its configuration. Deliveries will likely begin in 2023. According to reports, the aircraft has also caught the eye of defence officials in Colombia, Chile, Argentina and the Czech Republic.
The medium-size, twin-engine jet-powered military transport aircraft is designed to perform different types of military and civilian missions including humanitarian support, medical evacuation, search and rescue, cargo and troops transport, precision cargo drop, paratroopers operations and AAR. Known for its increased mobility, rugged design, high flexibility, proven technology and easier maintenance, the C-390 Millennium is able to transport up to 26 tonnes of cargo, including wheeled armoured fighting vehicles. It can be equipped with a self-defense system and ballistic protection, thus increasing its capacity to operate in hostile environments.
