The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) has dispatched 1,380 personnel to partake in the Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training 2024 (CARAT 2024) joint exercise from May 13 to May 20 in the vicinity of Ratai Bay and Piabung, Lampung province. They will train alongside 1,180 personnel from the United States Navy (USN) and the United States Marine Corps (USMC).
The Indonesian Navy’s contribution extends to a spectrum of defence assets including warships, aircraft, and artillery, including KRI Semarang (594), KRI Kerambit (627), KRI Kujang (642), two Panther helicopters, one CN-235 aircraft, and 11 tactical vehicles. Conversely, the United States Navy is also deploying USS Somerset (LPD-25), two LCAC units, four CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopters, and one unmanned aircraft.
“The exercise is very important, not only to increase professionalism in the field but also to improve relations and peace,” said the Commander of Fleet Command I of TNI AL, Rear Admiral Yoos Suryono Hadi, who officiated the start of the exercise. He further underscored the exercise’s aim to enhance interoperability, foster bilateral relations, promote friendship, and bolster the professionalism of participating personnel.
The Indonesian Navy’s involvement in CARAT 2024 is coordinated by the Indonesian Marine Corps Colonel Ludfy, while the USN’s contingent is led by Captain James Robinson, and the USMC by Colonel Sean Dynan.
Yoos also revealed a number of training materials that would be implemented, including decision making, knowledge exchange, or subject matter expert exchange (SMEE).
“Next are individual training and joint coastal defense exercises by integrating land troops, sea elements, and air elements,” he said.
CARAT 2024 in Indonesia represents a biennial bilateral joint exercise between the Indonesian Navy and the United States Seventh Fleet, aimed at enhancing military-to-military cooperation. The exercise employs an integrated scenario-based approach, where planning, preparation, and execution of technical and tactical components are conducted in tandem, with a focus on coastal defense and anti-amphibious operations.
In April, the US Navy’s Seventh Fleet also conducted the CARAT 2024 joint exercise with the Sri Lanka Navy.
