Changi Airport Receives First SAF Cargo From ExxonMobil

Our Bureau - : Jul 7, 2022 - : 6:32 pm

Singapore’s Changi airport received the first cargo delivery of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from ExxonMobil on Tuesday (7 July). The delivery is part of a one-year pilot program to test the SAF for aircraft.

This program will see the oil giant supplying SAF for both Singapore Airlines and Scoot flights from Changi until July 2023. The oil company was selected in February this year for this pilot program which was an initiative launched by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), Singapore Airlines (SIA), and Temasek.

“ExxonMobil is bringing its established capabilities in fuels manufacturing and logistics to help customers such as SIA achieve their net-zero ambitions,” said Geraldine Chin, chairman and managing director of ExxonMobil Asia Pacific.

According to the company’s press release, ExxonMobil is supplying the fossil-based refined aviation fuel which is then mixed with SAF from Neste Oil at ExxonMobil’s refinery and petrochemical complex in Singapore.

The company is planning to produce lower-emission fuels including SAF for more than 40,000 barrels daily by 2025, with a vision to increase the production to 200,000 barrels per day in 2030.

Demands for reduced carbon emissions in transportation sectors are expected to increase exponentially in the coming years. The gradual switch to SAF by many aircraft makers and airlines is one part of the effort together with other sectors that have already implemented the policy.
