Construction Begins on RMN’s LMSB2

Our Bureau - : Dec 6, 2024 - : 2:28 am

The construction of the Royal Malaysian Navy’s (RMN) second batch of Littoral Mission Ships (LMSB2) officially began with a steel cutting ceremony held at Istanbul Shipyard, Turkiye.

The event was officiated by the Chief of Navy, Admiral Datuk Zulhelmy bin Ithnain, and attended by a delegation from the Ministry of Defence, led by Deputy Secretary-General (Development) Dr Mohd Bakhari bin Ismail. Representatives from RMN, the LMSB2 Project Team, and the General Manager of Savunma Teknolojileri Muhendislik (STM), Mr Özgür Güleryüz, were also present. Malaysia’s Ambassador to Turkiye, His Excellency Sazali bin Mustafa Kamal, participated as the guest of honour.

The steel cutting, which involves the initial cutting of the ship’s steel plates, marks the start of construction. The LMSB2 is based on the ADA-Class corvette design, selected through a Government-to-Government memorandum of understanding. STM, serving as the main contractor, has experience with the ADA-Class corvettes, which are operated by the Turkish and Pakistani navies. Similar ships are under construction for Pakistan and Ukraine.

The LMSB2 vessels are designed to support a range of operational requirements, including anti-surface, anti-air, and electronic warfare. They will include modern weapon and sensor systems to support missions within Malaysia’s maritime territories.

Construction is expected to be completed by late 2027, with delivery to RMN scheduled thereafter.
