A group of companies and organizations have come together in Dubai to create a cold-chain collaboration to distribute COVID-19 vaccines by air, land and sea around the globe.
The Dubai Vaccines Logistics Alliance (DVLA) initiative involves Emirates SkyCargo, Dubai Airports, DP World, and Dubai-based non-profit organization (NGO) International Humanitarian City. The health consortium has been created to support COVAX, the global initiative co-led by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that aims to distribute two billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines this year.
DVLA’s focus will primarily be on emerging markets where populations have been hardest-hit by the pandemic. The alliance is also working with a broader set of stakeholders, including pharmaceuticals manufacturers, freight forwarders, government agencies and other entities.
Last October, SkyCargo announced the creation in Dubai of the world’s first dedicated airside facility for handling the life-saving vaccines by re-opening its SkyCentral DWC cargo terminal at Dubai South. The facility which has a 4,000-sq m temperature-controlled dedicated pharma storage area that can hold up to 10 million vials of vaccine within a two-to-eight degrees Celsius temperature range at any one point of time.
“Emirates SkyCargo has taken a global leadership position during the COVID-19 pandemic for the distribution of medical supplies and personal protective equipment (PPE),” said Nabil Sultan, divisional senior vice-president of cargo at Emirates, asserts: “We recently activated the world’s largest airside hub dedicated to the storage and global distribution of COVID-19 vaccines at Dubai South.”
