The Department of Defence revealed it is investing AUD111.2 million (USD75.9 million) to upgrade RAAF Base Townsville, Townsville Field Training Area and HMAS Cairns. The work package includes new and upgraded engineering services, building refurbishment and additional transit live-in accommodation.

The construction company CPB Contractors received the contract under the auspices of the North Queensland Mid-Term Refresh Programme. Construction commenced in early 2023, and should be completed by the middle of 2025.

Dan Fankhauser, First Assistant Secretary of Infrastructure Division, Security and Estate Group, said: ‘North Queensland is and will remain an important maritime, land, and air hub for Defence into the future. The North Queensland Mid-Term Refresh Programme ensures the ongoing sustainability of critical infrastructure in support of Australian Defence Force capability across the Townsville and Cairns region.’

CPB Contractors is expected to make extensive use of local businesses to complete the work.
