India’s Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has announced the succesful test firing of enhanced range versions of an indigenously developed 122mm caliber rocket.

The new rockets have been developed for use with the Indian Army and can destroy targets out to ranges of up to 40 km and the enhanced rocket system will replace the existing 122mm Grad rockets in the inventory.

The new enhanced range 122mm caliber rocket was test fired from a Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) on 25th June 2021 at the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha on India’s Eastern Seaboard.

The trials saw four numbers of the enhanced range version of 122mm rockets being test fired with the full instrumentation.

A DRDO release stated that the enhanced range rockets completed their mission objectives.

The Indian Army is estimated to have approximately 150 Russian origin BM-21 Grad launchers which are mounted on trucks and can fire a salvo of 40 rockets within 20 seconds.

The rocket systems have been developed jointly by Pune based Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) with manufacturing support from M/s Economic Explosives Limited, Nagpur.

DRDO is also developing an upgraded version of the Pinaka MBRL capable of striking targets out to ranges of 75 kilometres with high precision.

The Pinaka MK-II Rocket has been modified by integrating a Navigation, Control and Guidance System to the rockets to improve accuracy and enhance their range.  The navigation system fitted on Pinaka MK-IIs is aided by the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).
