DTI, RTA Test CS/AH2 105mm Howitzer Prototypes

The Defence Technology Institute (DTI) of Thailand, in collaboration with the Royal Thai Army (RTA), conducted testing and evaluation of two prototypes of the CS/AH2 105mm light howitzer at the Artillery Training Center in Lopburi Province. The tests, held from 27-30 August 2024, aimed to assess the performance and capabilities of the prototypes developed under a joint research and development project.

The evaluation process involved a series of firing tests, including range testing with high-explosive rounds, both Chinese and Thai-made, with a maximum range of 11.4 km. Additional tests covered accuracy, continuous firing, and direct firing, with the results adhering to the criteria set by the Army’s Project Testing and Evaluation Working Group.

This collaboration between DTI and the Royal Thai Army follows a contract signed with China’s Poly Technologies, Inc. in September 2021 for the development of the CS/AH2 prototype with a budget of THB 48 million (approximately USD 1.4 million). A memorandum of understanding between DTI and the RTA was signed in March 2023, leading to the prototype’s delivery for evaluation.

The CS/AH2, developed by China’s Poly Defense, resembles the BAE Systems M119 (L119) howitzer, which has been in service with the Royal Thai Army since 2006. The new prototype is equipped with advanced features, including a digital fire control system, satellite positioning, temperature measurement, and wind flow monitoring, all linked to a Forward Observation Officer (FOO).

The new CS/AH2 howitzer is projected to replace RTA’s M425 truck-mounted self-propelled howitzer, and M618A2 towed howitzer.
