EDEX 2021 assumes added importance for Northrop Grumman as Egypt is currently in discussions with the United States to acquire the company’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft.
France, which has been operating the E-2C Hawkeye since 1998 and is the only country other than the United States to operate its E-2 Hawkeyes from an aircraft carrier, is expected to take delivery of three such aircraft by 2027. Japan is planning to acquire nine aircraft of the type. Northrop Grumman completed its first delivery of the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye to the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) in March 2019 and has so far delivered three aircraft to the service.
Egypt and Taiwan are currently in different stages of discussions to acquire the aircraft that reached initial operational capability (IOC) with the US Navy in 2014. Egypt is one of the few air forces to have an airborne early warning as well as airborne electronic warfare capability and flies the E-2C Hawkeyes and the C-130H Hercules and Beech 1900 electronics intelligence (ELINT) aircraft. The country modernized five of the six E-2C Hawkeyes in the early 2000s and equipped them with APS-145 radar and upgraded mission computer, tactical mission system displays and navigation system.
According to Northrop Grumman, E-2D is two generations ahead of previous models and is capable of working with sea, air and land-based combat systems to defeat large and small targets. The aircraft is equipped with the Lockheed Martin AN/APY-9 AESA radar that has an estimated range of 550 km through 360-degree coverage and is also capable of identifying stealthy aircraft.
