Egypt will soon get 23 Boeing built CH-47F Chinook helicopters and related equipment from the United States, at an estimated cost of US$2.6 billion.
The U.S. State Department has made a determination approving the possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Egypt.
The CH-47F Chinook helicopters will be powered by T-55-GA-714A engines. The deal also includes 10 spare engines, besides the 46 installed.
Egypt had also requested to buy 29 AN/AAR-57 Common Missile Warning Systems (CMWS), 75 M-240 machine guns and Common Missile Warning System (CMWS) classified software.
According to a State Department spokesman, the proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a major Non-NATO Ally that continues to be an important strategic partner in the Middle East.
The proposed acquisition of the Chinook helicopters will improve Egypt’s heavy lift capability. Egypt could use this enhanced capability to strengthen its homeland defence and deter regional threats. Egypt is quietly building up its helicopter fleet by both upgrading the ageing units and purchasing new helos.
The country’s existing Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopters are being upgraded to the latest AH-64E Apache Guardian standard. In 2020, the State Department had made a determination approving a deal to refurbish Egypt’s 43 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters for an estimated cost of US$2.3 billion.
The United States, after a Strategic Dialogue with Egypt on November 9 last year, noted the significance of Cairo’s nationally funded contract to refurbish the Egyptian Apache helicopters, supporting hundreds of U.S. jobs and increasing Egyptian readiness.
Egypt has become one of the key weapons importers in the Middle East. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute’s (SIPRI) 2021 report, Egypt’s arms imports increased by 136 per cent between 2011–2015 and 2016–2020.
