ELBIT SYSTEMS Targeting Japanese Unmanned Systems Needs

Elbit Systems of Israel is targeting Japanese requirements for unmanned systems at the ongoing DSEI, where it is presenting its Hermes 900 medium altitude long endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial system (UAS), the cutting-edge ROOK unmanned robotic vehicle and the Seagull unmanned naval platform. These ground-breaking solutions that have caused dramatic changes on the battlefield. In addition to these platforms, Elbit Systems is presenting a wide range of defence technologies and systems.

Japan’s Ministry of Defence (Japan MOD) announced in its 2022 budget that it would test the operation of long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and conduct test operations to verify suitability for various Japan Maritime Self Defence Forces (JMSDF) missions and look into cooperation procedures with manned aircraft, etc. and study how they will conserve manpower and labor. The Japan MOD also announced that it would undertake research and performance tests on miniature ship-based UAVs using equipment prepared by private sector companies in order to confirm compatibility and operability of ship-based UAVs with JMSDF vessels Elbit is showcasing a scale model of its Hermes 900 UAS at the show. The Hermes 900 provides over the horizon, persistent multi-payload capabilities and has been procured by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and over a dozen countries around the globe. It can be equipped with a variety of high performance sensors, allowing it to detect ground or maritime targets, over a wide spectral range.

The Hermes 900 is based on the proven and mature building blocks of the Hermes UAS family with the highest level of airworthiness, safety & reliability. Elbit’s Skystriker fully autonomous loitering munitions (LM) can locate, acquire and strike operator designated targets with an up to 10 Kg warhead installed inside the fuselage, enabling high-precision performance. It uses electric propulsion and generates a low acoustic signature, making it hard to detect and defeat.
