Embraer Celebrates 20 Years of Ethanol-Powered Ipanema Aircraft

Our Bureau - : Oct 21, 2024 - : 10:38 pm

Embraer is commemorating the 20th anniversary of the certification of the Ipanema EMB-202A, the world’s only ethanol-powered agricultural aircraft produced in series. Since its approval on 19 October 2004, the aircraft has undergone several technological advancements and is now marketed as the EMB-203.

Over the past two decades, the Ipanema has prevented the emission of more than 28 million tonnes of CO2, averaging 1.4 million tonnes per year. The aircraft, produced domestically in Brazil, has improved its performance through the use of ethanol, a renewable energy source.

“More than 570 ethanol-powered Ipanemas have already been sold and more than 210 aircraft from previous versions have had their engines converted from aviation gasoline to biofuel in the last 20 years, which underlines the very high confidence of our operators,” said Sany Onofre, Embraer’s Agricultural Aviation leader.

“Synonymous with efficiency and low operating costs, the Ipanema is the perfect solution for those looking to increase productivity per hectare and contribute to the sustainability of the agricultural sector.”

The Ipanema can boost productivity by up to 30% per hectare and reduce operational costs by up to 57% compared to other equipment, offering flexibility and minimising crop damage during spraying operations.

In its latest version, the aircraft features an upgraded wing structure for greater efficiency and economy. The design also includes a higher cab with improved ergonomics, USB connectivity, air conditioning, and safety features such as an airbag-equipped seatbelt and enhanced steering controls.

The aircraft is widely used for applying both solid and liquid agricultural products. Recently, it has been involved in testing a method for the aerial application of biological pesticides in Brazil. This project, coordinated by Koppert, aims to advance sustainable agricultural practices through bio-inputs.
