Ethiopian Airlines, the national carrier of Ethiopia and the largest Airbus operator in Africa, has received its first A350-1000 aircraft from Airbus in Toulouse, France. This delivery marks a significant milestone as it is the first A350-1000 to be operated by an African airline. The aircraft is expected to enhance the airline’s premium service on important routes, including Washington D.C., London, Paris, and Frankfurt.

Currently, Ethiopian Airlines operates a fleet of 21 aircraft from the A350 Family, with plans to add 14 more in the coming years. This includes 11 A350-900 and three additional A350-1000 aircraft. The A350-1000 will share operational characteristics with the existing A350-900 fleet, facilitating easier training and maintenance for pilots and mechanics.

The A350-1000 features a total capacity of 395 seats, which will augment Ethiopian Airlines’ passenger capacity and improve the travel experience, particularly in its largest business class cabin. The airline will also implement Airbus’ new HBCplus satcom connectivity solution, providing high-speed connectivity throughout the flight.

The A350 is recognised as the most modern and efficient widebody aircraft in its category. Its innovative design incorporates advanced technologies and aerodynamics, resulting in significant improvements in efficiency and comfort.

Notably, the A350’s Airspace cabin is noted for being the quietest among twin-aisle aircraft, with a 50% reduction in noise compared to previous generations. It is equipped with modern in-flight amenities for enhanced passenger comfort. The aircraft’s new generation engines and the use of lightweight materials contribute to its status as the most fuel-efficient large widebody aircraft available.

Additionally, all Airbus A350 aircraft are designed to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus aiming for full SAF capability by 2030.

As of September 2024, a total of 1,340 A350s have been ordered by 60 customers globally, establishing the A350 as one of the most successful widebody aircraft in history.
