European Shipbuilders Advance MMPC Project’s Next Phase

Our Bureau - : Nov 4, 2024 - : 10:38 pm

A consortium of European shipbuilders has signed an initial agreement to progress to the second phase of the Modular and Multirole Patrol Corvette (MMPC) project. This development, announced during the Euronaval exhibition in Paris, involves shipyards Navantia (Spain), Fincantieri (Italy), and Naval Group (France), along with their joint venture Naviris. Greek engineering firm HYDRUS is also expected to join the consortium.

The agreement, signed on the sidelines of Euronaval, follows the European Commission’s May 2024 decision to approve the consortium’s proposal. The Commission had initially received the proposal in November 2023, which seeks to build on the foundational work of MMPC Call 1 (2021). This phase, known as Call 2, has an allocated European Defence Fund (EDF) budget of EUR 154.5 million and will be managed by the Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en Matière d’Armement (OCCAR-EA) on behalf of the European Commission.

The second phase of the MMPC project focuses on completing the design of these modular corvettes. According to a statement from the consortium, this phase will include the integration of advanced technology systems, allowing the vessels to support various operational roles. It will also mark the start of production for two prototype corvettes: a Long Range Multipurpose (LRM) version and a Full Combat Multipurpose (FCM) version.

These prototypes will serve as models for future European corvette fleets, aiming to enhance interoperability and standardisation among EU navies.
