Flight Departures Halted for Hours Across the U.S. Due to FAA Outage

Our Bureau - : Jan 12, 2023 - : 2:47 am

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration lifted its order to halt all domestic flight departures across the country on Wednesday after an hours-long outage caused extensive disruptions. Thousands of flights remain delayed or cancelled across the country.

The agency put a ground stop order in place after its NOTAM — or Notice to Air Missions — system failed. The FAA lifted the order shortly before 9 a.m. ET, and the agency said normal air traffic operations were resuming across the country. The cause of the problem was yet to be determined.

Airlines for America, an association representing US airlines, earlier said the outage was “causing significant operational delays.” Major US carriers including United Airlines, Delta and American Airlines all said they had grounded flights in response to the situation. United Airlines has issued a North America travel waiver in response to the outage.

More than 5,400 flights within, to and out of the U.S. were delayed as of around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the online flight tracker FlightAware. More than 940 flights were listed as canceled.

There was “no evidence of a cyberattack at this point,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a tweet. The tweet went on to say that President Joe Biden had directed the Department of Transportation to conduct a full investigation into the causes.

“Today’s FAA catastrophic system failure is a clear sign that America’s transportation network desperately needs significant upgrades,” U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman said in a statement Wednesday. “Americans deserve an end-to-end travel experience that is seamless and secure. And our nation’s economy depends on a best-in-class air travel system.
