French Navy Deploys CAMCOPTER S-100 for Olympic Maritime Security

The French Navy’s CAMCOPTER S-100 Unmanned Air System (UAS) Squadron was deployed to ensure the security of the waters surrounding Marseille during the 2024 Olympic Games held in France.

Stationed with the Navy’s Flottille 36F in Var, the CAMCOPTER S-100s monitored a maritime area spanning approximately 22,500 square nautical miles. Operating from Saint-Mandrier (Var), the systems provided real-time surveillance data to authorities overseeing events such as sailing, kitesurfing, and windsurfing in Marseille.

The S-100s were equipped with advanced Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) cameras and an Automatic Identification System (AIS) to detect and monitor any suspicious activities at sea.

Lubos Sramek, Director of Schiebel Aéronaval SAS in Toulon, commented on the operation: “It is an honour that the French Navy utilised their S-100 Squadron to monitor the surroundings of the Olympic Games. This is another great use case for the CAMCOPTER and shows the versatility of applications and capabilities.”

Schiebel’s CAMCOPTER S-100 Unmanned Air System (UAS) is a versatile platform used in both military and civilian contexts. This Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) UAS does not require a prepared area or additional equipment for launch and recovery. It is capable of operating during both day and night, in challenging weather conditions, with a beyond line-of-sight range of up to 200 km (108 nm) over land and sea. The carbon fibre and titanium fuselage allows for various payload and endurance configurations, with a service ceiling of up to 5,500 m (18,000 ft).
